PRISONERS OF FATE

At Sahiwal (Mandi Montgomery) in Pakistan, I was led by two boys to view the remains of an abandoned Sikh site. With much hesitation, I followed them inside a police station only to realize that this is the premises of an erstwhile gurdwara! Introducing ourselves to the police officer, we sought permission to explore.

In the courtyard, a locked-up prisoner extended his hand through the cellar bars, to which I reciprocated by extending my hand. He said, “For a crime never committed, I am imprisoned here for nothing! Ironically, for nothing, your community is now imprisoned out of these lands.”

These profound words, from the free soul of the prisoner, reminded me of a couplet by Fayyaz Hashmi,

Waqt Ki Qaid Mein Zindagi Hai Magar
Chand Ghadiyan Yehi Hain Jo Aazad Hain

My life is trapped in time’s bars
Just these solitary moments are free

Having remained imprisoned in the freedom of the world, I was finally experiencing a few moments of freedom in these lands from where our forefathers were imprisoned in foreign lands for nothing!
